Glass is one of the easiest materials to recycle as the quality doesn’t deteriorate when reprocessed. 100% of waste glass can be reclaimed and used in the manufacturing process. The glass is simply melted down and reformed into new glass containers, repeatedly. This process is known as remelt and has several environmental benefits including saving energy and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
Additionally, recycling glass, has a significant impact on reducing spend on general waste costs owing to the elimination of vast weight and size of glass waste in the lifts. However, there are certain forms of glass that do not melt at the same temperatures as jars and bottles. This meaning that the full load may be rejected if it includes;
- Glass cookware
- Drinking glasses
- Light bulbs and tubes
- Cosmetic bottle products
Glass waste is typically collected in tough 240 litre wheelie bins, glass waste can also be stored in 660 litre bins depending on the business output and needs. The glass can be separated at source or at a glass recycling plant into the three main colour categories; green, brown and clear where it is cleaned and screened before being sent on for smelting.
